Spices Under Fire: MDH

MDH Spices is currently facing scrutiny over quality concerns after regulatory actions in Hong Kong and Singapore. The issues arose when the Hong Kong Centre for Food Safety detected a pesticide in several of MDH’s spice products during routine surveillance, prompting a recall of affected products. Similar actions have occurred in Singapore. In response, MDH has refuted these allegations, stating that they are baseless and that no concrete evidence has been provided to support the claims. The company insists that their products are safe for consumption.

Meanwhile, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) along with the Spices Board of India is conducting investigations to ensure compliance and address the alleged contamination issues. They are also seeking more information from the regulatory bodies in Hong Kong and Singapore to understand the basis of their decisions and are inspecting MDH’s manufacturing facilities to pinpoint any potential quality lapses.

This situation has caught the attention of other international markets as well, with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration also gathering information on MDH and Everest spices following these incidents (Hindustan Times) (Hindustan Times) (Hindustan Times) (Al Arabiya) (Yahoo Finance) (Yahoo Finance) (ABP Live).

Is the current stock sold in Melbourne / Australia affected by this?

Currently, MDH spices are under scrutiny by Australia’s food safety agency, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), due to concerns about possible contamination with ethylene oxide, a pesticide not permitted for use in foods sold in Australia. Although MDH has refuted claims about the presence of this pesticide in their products, the agency has not yet reached a decision on whether a recall will be necessary. They are coordinating with international counterparts and local food enforcement agencies to assess the situation and determine the need for further action in Australia (Business Today).
