Janmashtami: When Krishna Was Born
Janmashtami is a Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, one of the famous Hindu divinities. It is believed that Lord Krishna was born at midnight on the eighth day of Bhadrapada month ‘s Krishan Paksha.
Janmashtami is one of the most celebrated hindu festivals in India. Hindus celebrate Janmashtami by decorating their houses with flowers and light. People keep fast, sing holy songs, visit temples and stay awake at night. After Krishna’s midnight hour birth, devotees place a baby bed in a room with a holy Kalash on it and perform Puja. Women symbolize God Krishna’s journey into their homes by drawing tiny footprints outside the doors, walking towards their house. Krishna temples are decorated, recitations are held and dance-drama events called Rasa Lila are organized. These drama-dance plays begin a few days before Janmashtami.
Delicious sweets and savoury dishes like like panjiri, kheer, ladoo and Makhaan Mishri are prepared and shared on Janmashtami. Makhaan Mishri is considered to be Krishna’s favorite dish which is also very easy to make by just mixing mishri and whipped butter.
We hope that while you celebrate Janmashtami, Lord Krishna will bless your life with love, laughter and prosperity.
Happy Janmashtami from us!
